Snails Trails

Well I have had this Katie Jump Rope fabric for awhile, and I actually even started cutting out the shapes for the start of a new quilt. However that was weeks ago. I really love all the browns mixed with aqua in this set I just had to do something with it. I originally wanted to add some yellow, then pink, then I decided to stick with the brown and blue. I am going to add the Katie jump rope ribbon aqua blue for the binding, and I think that will make it pop real nicely. Kinda plain I know but perfect start to get me motivated to start quilting again. I pulled my semi- travel supplies to the kitchen table so I could watch Sophia playing while I finished cutting. I even finished my sample block to see how it would look. I really liked it amazingly.
The pattern is called Snails Trails or Monkey Wrench same thing. Not a very complicated pattern but somewhat time consuming compared to the simple squares I was going to use. The idea is to separate the light colored background and the dark colors, to get the obvious pattern. Only not so obvious if that makes sense. I think when its all finished it might look pretty cool. I guess we will see. I will keep ya updated on how it's coming along. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Here is the complete sample it's a large 12x12 block. Finished size

Bloggers United Today Against the CPSIA

This new law hits home for me. As a small business owner myself, selling boutique children's items. I am appalled this would even be considered. I started my business 3 months pregnant, as a way to supplement our family's income while I was out of work. I started with handmade bags for women, then children and slowly transformed into a mostly child based shop. The way this law stands all handmade children's items will be considered contraband on Feb.10th Due to the New law CPSIA.
The world has been using RAW material to make things since the beginning. Handmade is beautiful and unique not to mention one of a kind. Each individual item is crafted with love, not intentions to hurt people. Let alone children.
Please get informed as much as you can, send letters to your mayors, senators, whoever you can. In fact I think there is a number to the white house I even came across. When I find it again I will attach it as well.

I wanted to share one of the best, informative blog I came across today, as our bloggers united today to let everyone know how they will be affected in this new transition. This is not something to look passed. Get informed! It will effect more people then we think.
************************
The information below I did not write myself, I came across it while following up on info about the new law on our bloggers unite challenge.

The following outlines some of the many problems with the CPSIA and provides insight on how YOU may be affected. Reposted from Etsy sellers chichiboulie and Winklepots:Have you asked yourself what your government is doing to protect your children from lead contained in toys? The answer? They're banning toys, taking books from schools and libraries, hurting low income families, killing entrepreneurial spirit and risking putting the economy in an even greater depression than we've seen in decades. I'd like to introduce you to their solution: the CPSIA.Do you know about the CPSIA? No? Then I ask you to take a few minutes to find out about it. The

CPSIA stands for Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, a new set of laws that will come into effect on 10 February, 2009 and will impact many, many people in a negative way. Make no mistake, this is very real.
View it for yourself. If Forbes, the American Library Association and numerous other media are paying attention, perhaps you should too. How will these new laws affect you? Well, here are a few examples:

To the Parents of Young Students: Due to the new law, expect to see the cost of school supplies sky rocket. While those paper clips weren't originally intended for your student to use, they will need to be tested now that your 11-year-old needs them for his school project. This law applies to any and all school supplies (textbooks, pencils, crayons, paper, etc.) being used by children under 12.

To the Avid Reader: Due to the new law, all children's books will be pulled from library and school shelves, as there is no exemption for them. That’s okay though, there's always television. Our children don’t need to learn the love of reading after all. Article from the American Library Association http://www.wo.ala.org/districtdispatch/?p=1322

To the Lover of All Things Handmade: Due to the new law, you will now be given a cotton ball and an instruction manual so you can make it yourself since that blanket you originally had your eye on for $50 will now cost you around $1,000 after it's passed testing. It won't even be the one-of-a-kind blanket you were hoping for. Items are destroyed in the testing process making one-of-a-kind items virtually impossible. So that gorgeous hand-knit hat you bought your child this past winter won’t be available next winter.

To the Environmentalist: Due to the new law, all items in non-compliance will now be dumped into our already overflowing landfills. Imagine not just products from the small business owners, but the Big Box Stores as well. You can't sell it so you must toss it. Or be potentially sued for selling it. You can't even give them away. If you are caught, it is still a violation.

To the Second-Hand Shopper: Due to the new law, you will now need to spend $20 for that brand new pair of jeans for your 2-year old, rather than shop at the Goodwill for second hand. Many resale shops are eliminating children's items all together to avoid future lawsuits.

To the Entrepreneur: Due to this new law, you will be forced to adhere to strict testing of your unique products or discontinue to make and/or sell them. Small businesses will be likely to be unable to afford the cost of testing and be forced to close up shop. Due to the current economic state, you'll have to hope for the best when it comes to finding a new job in Corporate America.

To the Antique Toy Collector: Due to the new law, you'd better start buying now because it's all going to private collection and will no longer be available to purchase. “Because the new rules apply retroactively, toys and clothes already on the shelf will have to be thrown out if they aren't certified as safe.” http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123189645948879745.html

To the American Economy: Already struggling under an economy that hasn’t been this weak in decades, the American economy will be hit harder with the inevitable loss of jobs and revenues from suppliers, small businesses and consumers. The required testing is far too costly and restrictive for small businesses or individuals to undertake.

To the Worldwide Economy: Due to this new law, many foreign manufacturers have already pulled out of the US market. You can imagine the impact of this on their businesses. If you think this is exaggerating, here is a recent article from Forbes http://www.forbes.com/2009/01/16/cpsia-safety-toys-oped-cx_wo_0116olson.html And for those of you prepared to be stupefied and boggled, The New Law http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/cpsia.html Did you know? If this upsets or alarms you, please react.

Sophie's Minky

I finally sat down and finished it. Not only did I finish Sophie's much anticipated blanket, but I was able to make one for my shop as well. Go see it here http://getsassed.etsy.com/ . Sophie loves it to.It's so soft and I can't seem to get it away from her now. I guess that is a good thing that she loves it so much. I really loved they way all the layers came together I was very worried about all the fabrics being so flexible. With a little craft fuse along the sewing edge it all came out ok.

An Angel Get's it's wings

With Valentines Day right around the corner I wanted to share this cute little craft I picked up at work. It's a cute easy to make Gaurdian Angel heart necklace. Super easy even for children to create. Even add your own ideas to it. Enjoy

The supplies you will need:

1 paperclip ( butterfly style clip)

1 piece of 1/8" ribbon cut 30" long

1 heart shaped bead
(hole going from top to bottom)

Lighter or controlled flame

First fold the ribbon in half. Push the folded side through the paper clip and pull the tails of the ribbon through it to make a knot around the top of the paper clip. String the heart shaped bead through both ribbons. You can tie a knot abouve the heart bead to keep it on the necklace. Then tie off the end to complete the hole that goes arounf your neck. Las step is to lightly hit the end of the ribbons with a lighter to prevent the ends from fraying.

That's it you have a finished necklace. You can give it away for Valentines as a way of telling someone how much you care. Everyone needs a Gaurdian Angel. Make yours today

This project is so much fun, Quick and easy to. Go ahead try it out.

In an effort to show that our blogs a post: letters and complaints have been heard. It was nice to see a little change coming our way for once. If anyone can clear this up for me if I am wrong but it looks like we are making a dent ... read this good news I must say when clarifications start surfacing we may still flourish our handmade items.
