So this morning I get up to read a few blog entries before I head to my regular Sunday morning job. A blog I have followed for quite awhile posted something so shocking to me, I am utterly disgusted by it. I would like to thank you Nikki over at "You Sew Girl" for bringing this out. It needed to be spotted and taken care of.
This Etsy seller, has been stealing patterns given by bloggers. These patterns are given to the public by blog readers at no charge. Then this seller is not only selling their free patterns, but using their pictures as well. This is Disgusting to me.
I hope Etsy gets enough response on this matter to remove that person from our handmade community. She has even stolen patterns from large designers. Amy Butlers credit card case pattern, Heather Bailey's Bitty booties pattern... I am appalled.
You all know how I feel about this subject. A pattern of mine was stolen and is still be used by an Etsy member for her own benefit as well. Please do not buy from this seller.
If you would like the patterns, please let me know and I will give you a direct link if possible to the blog and the pattern FOR FREE!!
So how do you feel about it

You know, I understand that in this economy some people are desperate to make a buck. I'm sorry they don't have enough creativity to come up with their own designs. However, stealing is never ok. They stole someone's hard work and ideas. I know that when a blog owner decides to put up a pattern they're giving us a little piece of them. I view it as a sharing between friends. For an outsider to come in and try to profit is wrong.
ReplyDeleteYou will be happy to know that this person has NO listings on etsy at this time. Guess someone got the message.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you spoke up...as it looks like the situation has been corrected by etsy???
ReplyDeleteI don't see what people hope to gain by doing this. You would think they would know that they would be caught and get in trouble eventually. Glad she no longer has the site.
ReplyDeleteYikes...i hope the shame is overwhelming for this person.
ReplyDeleteWow that is sad and pathetic. I am glad its down now.
ReplyDeleteI am glad to see the patterns have ben taken down. But I have a question: If you make something from a free pattern, are you not allowed to sell the finished product? If you buy a pattern, are you allowed to sell the finished product that you make? I guess I am just clueless about these thing. Although, I did know that you should never try to sell a pattern you got for free.
ReplyDeleteThe purse was featured by Pat Sloan last New Years. It was a fun project and her site shows a lot of the ones we did. It is definately a disgrace that the person mentioned did that. Most of us are so grateful to share with each other, we appreciate the generosity for ALL THE FREE PATTERS. Please let" one small apple spoil the whole bunch" Thanks for bringing it to everyones attention
ReplyDeleteCan you believe the gall of some people? Unbelievable! This is stealing, plain and simple. And it's usually done by the same people who would make the loudest stink about it if this were done to them. I guess some people never learned that golden rule that is true all through life...do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
ReplyDeleteVery sad.

That is horrible! I have used patterns and ideas I've found on blogs for sewing projects before, but I try to always give credit where it is due and to rip people off by selling something that they could get for free is just awful! But as they say, "You reap what you sew." (pun intended) And they won't get away with it for very long I'm sure before that old saying applies to them.
ReplyDeleteIt just goes to show that there are some out there, that don't have any problems sleeping at night, even knowing they've done the wrong thing. Theft, is theft, no matter how you wrap it up. This is one of the reasons why I only sell paper patterns and not PDF. It makes it so easy for someone else to either steal the design or forward it on to their 100 or so friends and you don't benefit from it as the designer. Glad to see that he/she now has no items for sale in his/her shop.
ReplyDeleteWow, that is really sad. I am glad it seems to have been rectified! Good work!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your support on this.Intellectual property is a huge issue for those of us who make our livings by putting our creativity into the public domain. Mostly it's hard to police but this was such a blatant violation.... Thankfully, it seems the shop is empty now.
ReplyDeleteI had the same problem when I sold on ebay. My mother made me a valance to sell and someone copied my picture. I emailed the seller about this since there was absolulty no way she had the same valance because my mother made mine. She felt that since they were similar she used my picture. After a long battle with ebay I had to prove the picture was mine and they suggested I copyright (Too expensive) or water mark my pictures. We are in a sad state of affairs when people think they can steal others work and feel no remorse about it.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you are blogging about it. Keep spreading the word .
That is horrible!!! How sad. I am glad you brought this forward!
ReplyDeletelooks like etsy took her down!! sorry that has happened. it is shocking that someone that could be so blatant
ReplyDeleteso sad on so many levels.
ReplyDeleteThanks for making us aware and I will not be buying for that seller.
ReplyDeleteI have just started my own little Etsy shop.
I love you stuff.
cheers
Christine
Ugh, that is bad! Hopefully all the hooplas will be resolved quickly! It's not okay to steal the patterns.
ReplyDeleteWell, less than 24 hours later, that shop is empty - glad to see them exposed...and hopefully the sales that were there are refunded.
ReplyDeleteOMG to steal a free pattern and sell it is downright disgraceful alright. How disgusting. They weren't Chinese/Japenese were they? A blog friend brought to my attention a site that is stealing tutorials and claiming them as their own. My needlecase was one of them. My friend and I contacted as many of the people that we recognised their tutorials and they have since been removed but her site is still there. If you want to take a look you may notice some more that I cant recognise.I will send you an email with the link...hugs Khris
ReplyDeletehappened to me too. in a small way makes me not want to share tutorials...even patterns get stolen and claimed as their own. sad. so glad that at least this one shop has been shut down.
