Birdie Block of the month

I joined up in a block of the month group with little miss shabby.  Embroidery is a new adventure for me. I just started to teach myself through you tube videos and blogs. Although it's only a few months into it, I really love having another project to have on hand while traveling or when I just want to relax with a glass of wine.

Every month Little Miss Shabby will post a new embroidery challenge for everyone to make. It's a free design and you can quilt along with us, and share your blocks with the flickr group.

Fabric used::
Robert Kaufman Kona Snow
Moda Sugar Pop - by Liz Scott

How do you learn a new talent? Books? Classes? Are you more a visual learner rather then a person who can be told something and just do it? I am curious now.

Craft On!

  1. I am a visual learner also...and have been thinking of doing this BOM, not one for stitchery but want to try.

  2. I joined this one, too! And it'll be my first foray into hand embroidery, so we'll see how it goes!

    When learning something new, I usually scour blogs for tutorials. If I can't find much, I'll post on Flickr and/or look on YouTube. Unfortunately, I find that with more "traditional" crafts, it's hard to find a good modern book on the subject. Luckily the quilting world has so many great new books that have come out, so that's not a problem there.

  3. Barb:: You should try it Barb, she gives videos on each months block to show you how to do the stiches required for the block. Talk about going above and beyond :)

    Elena:: I agree the blogging community is great for tutorials and videos. Even bloggers writing books. It's like unlimited inspiration

  6. Your birdie block is adorable! I'd love to learn embroidery, too! I've been practicing free motion using my sewing machine. I've not had a lot of luck with u-tube videos. I tend to check out books at the library to learn new stuff. I also blog hop to find tutorials.
    Keep up your good works...I think you've nailed embroidery!

  7. I like reading instructions, but I must do things with my own hands to really learn.

  8. Very cute block Terri!
    I just dig in and try something; buy a pattern, get a book from the library or watch a video. Classes are great, but none available where I live.

  10. Cute block! I like to learn through books but sometimes I can't get ahold of the ones I'd like to learn from. Would love to do classes but can never get out of the house for one. So online is usually where I find all the things I need to know.

I love you for this. {If I finish it!} I will call my quilt Terri's Twitter because I saw it through you on twitter! I'm off to print it out now and research this some more! --Wendy from WendysHat
