Shortly after entering the hexie craze, I made a decision to finally cut some of my priceless fabric and make a pillow. Originally I had planned on just sewing them all together randomly. I made a few hundred hexagons, then started piecing them together in a grandmothers flower pattern just to see how I liked them.
After about four or so grandmother flowers, I absolutely hated it. As much as I like this line, I was not feeling them altogether in this type of piecing. I gave up the project and handed all of my precut squares to a friend and told her to make something pretty. Even 3 inch squares can be used for something right?
Just minutes after I gave away my beloved fabric I was talking with the girls from the guild. they told me to stick with it and that they thought it would be beautiful if I just let myself get used to it a bit more. So I took all the ones I had left after giving many away and stuck them back in my little hexie briefcase for another day.
Just yesterday the idea came to me. What about splitting up the flowers with some Kona snow? So guess what I did... Of course I made some Kona Snow hexies and began piecing it. Just a simple border around the flowers to break up the prints a bit. I suppose it would look pretty spectacular if I color coordinated the flowers as well, but i seem to be liking the randomness right now.
Because of this small hexagon adventure, this has new potential. Instead of being a pillow for my couch, it will now be a full on quilt. Ok maybe just a lap quilt but still. How long will it take to finish? Who knows but I think it will be worth it in the end.
What are you working on this week?
that is going be spectacular!!!! I love hexies and I love FMF and I love kona snow - so you've got the perfect recipe there, haven't you?!
ReplyDeleteI've been slaving away like a mad woman on a quilt this week. Some things never change......
this is beautiful...this week i am working on some blocks for a vintage sheet quilting bee.
ReplyDeleteHexies are such a craze!!! I haven't done any yet. Right now I am working on around 100 prairie points to sew together for a flag--for my daddy:)
ReplyDeleteI envy your patience for making such beautiful patchworks and hexies and such. I can't even do simple square patchworks. I think it's going to be beautiful
ReplyDeleteIt's going to look GREAT! Don't you love it when a solution comes to you and works out so nicely?!
ReplyDeleteI love to make hexagons too and have endeavored to make a queen size Grandmother's flower garden quilt. I am also using Kona Snow - but for years my instinct was always to make everything very bright and very busy. Solids can feel kind of boring sometimes, but they really make other fabrics pop and shine.
ReplyDeleteCute, very fun, but never saw the method basting through the paper...
ReplyDeleteYou are so patient. I don't think i could attempt a whole quilt. All that hand piecing is really driving me nuts! Plus my finger has a permanent hole in it. Anyway, 'nuff said about that. I do like what you are going with, the snow makes it work. Keep at it! It will be fab when it's done :)
ReplyDeleteI know I wouldn't have the patience for this. I love the randomness of the colours together. It's going to be one spectacular quilt! Monique xx

They look amazing with the snow, Terri! What a fabulous idea your guild friends had! Why does everyone have to tempt me with such beautiful inspiration? ;) --Jen
ReplyDeleteOh, wow...This looks like a ton of work...but very impressive. I can't wait to see it finished.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day. ~Natalie
This is going to be stunning when complete!
ReplyDeleteThe main thing is that you enjoy making them. I think it will be a stunning quilt.

Great idea, the Kona snow....love how it is coming along.
ReplyDeleteMy mom made a quilt like that when I was a teenager. She hand stitched everything, so it took her about 6 years to finish. Sometimes she would get so sick of it that she would have to just put it aside for a few months. But whenever she was going on a plane (before 9/11) or car trip, she would bring it along and sew more pieces. It's absolutely gorgeous on her bed now, and definitely an heirloom!
ReplyDeleteThank you everyone for the pick me up. I know this will be a long adventure but I think it will be just as beautiful as you all think it will be.
ReplyDeleteGo go go Terri! I'm also paper piecing a king size hexagon quilt from my Liberty of London. Yeah, it'll take forever but I just tell myself it will be a family heirloom we'll have forever, so no rush!~
ReplyDeleteThat's perfect using the white in between. Its going to be gorgeous!
ReplyDeletejust beautiful! love the white in there! really lets the fabrics shine!
ReplyDeleteI love it, Terri! Looks great with the Kona and that's the perfect way to quiet it down visually. Now your eyes can "rest" on each flower and you can enjoy the individual prints.
ReplyDeleteWhat size hexes are you using? Did you get them precut?
this looks fab and you can sooo whip one out... your like a well oiled machine!! ;)

It looks lovely! The Kona Snow was just what it needed. Great idea! I love the GFG quilts, I just don't know if I have enough patience to see one through to the end. I was thinking of making one with really large hexagons. Like 10 inch. :) It would go faster, right?
ReplyDeletewow! I think this is going to be fabulous! I cannot imagine me even trying hexies since I can't even get my squares lined up. Amazing - really. Can't wait to see the finished product.
ReplyDeleteThese are gorgeous. I say go for a quilt! :)
ReplyDeleteWonderful, Terri! I love your FMF hexie flowers!
ReplyDeleteLove these hexies!!! What an amazing quilt this will be!
