In need of a workhorse

After months now of saving my money for a new sewing machine, I received that call from the husband that everyone looks forward to. Last night my husband tells me, I want to buy you a new machine. "WOW, REALLY". He wasn't kidding. After listening to countless curse words, and vocal frustration, he wanted to replace my dreadful headache with a shiney new love.
So Sophia and I went out today looking for a new machine. Now I am still saving for that big beautiful machine later, but for now I need a workhorse. Something I can use for four or more hours a day, cutting through layers and layers of fabric, and taking my abuse. I walk into the dealer today and tell her how much sewing I do, how often I do it, and what I will be sewing. She directs me to the Emerald 116. A basic Viking model, and what she called, "The Workhorse". Perfect that is just what I needed. I looked at the model above it, and a few above that, but came right back to this beautiful machine that would end all my misery.
I did not buy it yet, I wanted to go online and read some reviews, check prices yadda yadda. You know. This lady is paying the taxes for me, Throwing in a FREE extension table, as well as price match. Of course I am sure I will not find that kind of a deal anywhere. I am so exited, I will post pictures when we go get it.
What kind of machine is your "workhorse"?

  1. For me will have to be the Janome 6500 - the first sewing machine I have ever owned purchase last December. And I have completed two quilts, one waiting to be quilted and another ongoing piecing. All queen size and one king for my parents.

  3. Mine would be my Bernina 1130. It is 10 years old and still treats me right!

  4. Mine is just a plain old Kenmore but it has stood up to the challenge so far.

If the machine comes with a walking foot be sure to get it. The ones that come with the machine seem to work better than the generic ones.

  5. I having a Viking Lily 555 since 2002. I sew everything and anything on it. The accessories are expensive though. I paid $90 for a walking foot.

  6. My little macine is a Janome 4900. My seamstress sister in law directed me to the Janome brand. One of my very good friends who sews quilts and other crafts for a living swears by her Husqvarna. I can't remember exactly but I remember it was several thousand. Such a versatile machine though.

  7. Oh, you lucky woman, you. I have a cheap Brother that is getting lots of abuse from me. But that's all I can afford for now. I'm going to try to get my MIL's old, old machine oiled up and working to do some really heavy duty work. It's a Domestique. I think.

  8. Mine is a Viking Platinum 755. Yes, the accessories are expensive. Feet are about $32 each. Just make sure this machine will make you a great 1/4" seam. I have to tweak the stitch on my machine to get it right, but with 25 needle positions that is not a problem :-)

  9. I've got a basic Kenmore model - it was a birthday present from my folks before I knew really anything about quilting. One day, sigh, I will upgrade, but for now, it works for me :)

  10. You will love it. I have a Husqvarna Scandanavia 200 and I love it. You can't go wrong with it. I have made 6 aprons and some burp cloths with it and it is awesome.
